Do regular trims make hair regrowth faster?

You probably have heard the myth: a haircut will make your hair regrow. As you perhaps supposed; cutting your hair does not make it regrow faster. Hair regrowth starts at the follicles in your scalp. Hair regrowth rate is unaffected by regular haircuts, colour or styling. Nevertheless, how you treat your hair can affect how thick and healthy it looks.

Regular trims and hair regrowth

A hair strand has multiple layers. When the outer layer is damaged, your hair splits lengthwise. This results in a split end. When the end of a hair strand splits, it can travel upwards. This can eventually cause your hair to break off.

When you trim unhealthy split ends, you will notice less hair breakage. This makes it look thicker and even shinier. Regular hair trimming can remove split ends and hair damage. This will make the hair appear to regrow faster because the hair will break less and, thus, grow longer in a shorter amount of time.

What influences healthy hair regrowth?

No amount of styling products, shampoo or haircuts have a real effect on hair regrowth. What influences hair regrowth and hair fall is the health of the hair follicle. Hair follicles need nutrients to grow strong. When the body does not get enough nutrients, hair can be affected. So, it is important to get a healthy, balanced diet.

Consistent intake of the right blend of vitamins and minerals can promote hair regrowth in those with thinning hair. Being kind to your scalp helps hair regrowth. This won’t promote hair growth outright. But keeping the scalp clean and nourished with a gentle, exfoliating shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner will help create the ideal scalp environment for hair regrowth. When the scalp is free from oil and dirt, the hair will grow more healthily.

Keep hair cleansed with a gentle shampoo 1-3 times per week (depending on hair type). The scalp should be cleansed of residue and build-up. This ensures good circulation. Hair should be nourished with moisturizing conditioners. Ensure the water you use is not too warm or too cold.

Be aware of the seasonal changes. Rain and humidity, extreme cold and heat can make for changes in your body, hence, your hair. Protect your hair from chlorine, salt, sun and other damaging exposures. Use hats, scarves and safe hair products.

Use a satin or silk pillowcase or scarf to avoid hair breakage and hair damage. Hair can catch and pull on cotton pillowcases. Also try pulling hair up, with a loose elastic band, while you sleep so it doesn’t risk hair breakage.

When to see a doctor?

Consult a doctor if you notice any symptoms such as:

  • Hair falls out unexpectedly or in clumps
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Redness, flaking or scarring of the scalp in the area of hair loss
  • Baldness in women under the age of 30
  • Signs of abnormally high testosterone levels in women, including abnormal menstrual periods, deepening of the voice, acne, hair loss in a male pattern or hair growth in unusual places (face, chest)
