The psychological causes of impotence are numerous, and many are not well understood. Anxiety, depression, and stress are known to contribute to reduced sperm count, decreased sperm motility, and less semen production. Because of this, many men may try to treat their reduced sperm count by taking prescription medication. But while medication may provide some temporary relief, the underlying causes of impotence may not be treated, making the medications ineffective.

Other psychological causes of impotence include hypogonadism, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and testosterone deficiency. Impotence can also result from severe hypothyroidism, where thyroid hormones fail to produce sufficient testosterone. Hypogonadism can be treated using synthetic hormones, whereas polycystic ovarian syndrome is only treatable by surgical procedures. Impotence due to PCOS typically only affects a small percentage of men who have the condition. Testosterone replacement therapy is one effective treatment option for treating impotence caused by PCOS. And while it can be effective, it does carry the potential for harmful side effects like acne, dry mouth, and enlargement of breast tissue.
